Professor Colm McAlinden is an NHS Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specialising in cataract, cornea and refractive surgery, and Honorary Professor at Cardiff University. He completed specialist ophthalmology training in Wales, followed by fellowship training in Cornea and Cataract at Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead, and has undertaken additional training at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, Harvard Medical School.

An internationally recognised clinician-scientist, Professor McAlinden holds five academic degrees, including a PhD and MD, and has authored more than 195 peer-reviewed publications. His research interests include refractive surgery, cataract surgery, keratoconus and patient-reported outcomes. He developed the widely used Quality of Vision (QoV) questionnaire and serves on the editorial boards of seven peer-reviewed journals.

Leadership & Education

Professor McAlinden is a frequent invited speaker at national and international meetings and holds visiting professorships at Fudan University and Wenzhou Medical University in China. He is Treasurer of the British Society for Refractive Surgery (BSRS), Co-lead of the Cataract and Refractive Surgery postgraduate module at Cardiff University, and actively supervises PhD students and trainee researchers.

His contributions to ophthalmology have been recognised through numerous national and international awards, including the Patrick Trevor-Roper Award from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, the Foulkes Foundation Fellowship and the Obstbaum Award.
